7 Day Instrument Rating
Not only is it possible to get your instrument rating in 7 days, you will gain a better understanding of the procedures and retain what you learned longer than in the typical approach. However, to achieve these results, research has shown that a scenarios based curriculum combined with the use of an FAA approved simulator is essential to success. Scenarios![]() |
In May 2006, the University of North Dakota reported the results of a research study involving an instrument training program using a scenarios based curriculum. The study showed better and faster skill learning in the scenarios group, particularly in the critical areas of decision making, use of automation, situational awareness, and higher order thinking compared to the non scenarios group. In short, scenario based training results in more effective learning that will stand you in good stead when you apply what you learned in the real world of instrument flying. |
Simulators![]() |
The use of simulators has been shown to be a superior training method, saving time and money. A 2002 study by the Institute of Aviation at the University of Illinois Humanfactors.uiuc.edu/Reports&PapersPDFs/TechReport/02-04.pdf , found that an hour of simulator time saved an hour of flight training in an airplane. That means, using a simulator for the 10 hours approved by the FAA, you will save 10 hours in the airplane. That's why a scenarios based curriculum, combined with simulator training will get you that instrument rating in as few as 40-50 intensive hours instead of the national average of 70 hours in an airplane. |
The curriculum uses practical scenarios in the simulator that include a variety of weather, equipment malfunctions, and other real world IFR scenarios that will help you become a competent instrument pilot. The simulator you will use is an ELITE P135, now equipped with a Garmin 430 and approved for 10 of the 40 hours of simulated time required for the instrument rating.

You will be able to analyze each flight during the post flight brief. Using the latest GPS tracking tools you will see your flight displayed in Google Earth. See example below.
